I know I’m a little late for Banned Books Week (September 26-October 3), but as a militant library supporter, I couldn’t resist posting this great image:
My kids’ idea of fun is to hang out at the library. When each boy enters kindergarten, he gets to acquire his own library card. Beyond the elementary and middle school libraries, we regularly patronize two libraries (Hillsdale Library and Garden Home Library) and occasionally others (Beaverton and Capitol Hill). The librarians know us by face and sometimes by name. We frequently (and not-too-unhappily) pay overdue fines, simply because as a family we check out so many materials that it’s sometimes hard to keep up with them all.
I have my own personal librarian–Mike. I put materials on hold on the web, and he retrieves and returns them for me on his regular visits there. It’s lovely!! We rarely pay for DVDs–instead I put them on hold and wait for weeks until they become available.
This arrived in the mail yesterday–my “I Read Banned Books” bracelet–which a former colleague and Facebook friend told me about when several people were posting during Banned Books Week. I love it!
