This week I returned to Sultan’s Kitchen to do a proper review. Mike was the first one to give this cart a try, and he soon converted me. I’ve never been to Turkey, but my parents had an incredible trip there a few years ago…and one of Kieran’s best buddies has a Turkish mother.The cart, which is the only one in Portland, is run by Sadi and Kathy Yildizhan. Sadi is Turkish and has been cooking for 27 years, and Kathy is from the United States and teaches Turkish cooking at Portland Community College.

Sultan’s Kitchen offers Turkish specialties of iskender, durum, gyros, borek (spinach pie), chicken and lamb plates, coban salad, and baklava. All three times I’ve been to Sultan’s Kitchen I’ve had the chicken plate. Next time I’ll have to force myself to try something different!

The chicken plate ($6) features tender barbecued chicken with tomato sauce and sour cream, Turkish rice, and coban salad, which consists of diced tomatoes, cucumber, onion, parsley, house dressing, and feta cheese. I keep thinking I will eat just half of it and save the other half for lunch the next day, but I can’t stop eating it once I start–it’s so tasty!
And I have a particular weakness for the homemade Turkish baklava. At $3 for two small pieces, it’s more expensive than you might typically find it, but the fresh, homemade quality makes it worth every cent.

My verdict: Yes, I’ll definitely be back…next time to try something new, maybe the iskender or borek!
