Thank you for sharing this. It is really poignant. I have three children, and my first son was born late and had meconium in his lungs. He had a hard time breathing for the first hours of his life, and we were afraid that he might never have healthy lungs. My second son just took his sweet time breathing on his own after he was born. It's so easy to forget how precious they are when they are being so infuriating, and it's so easy to not treat them with respect when we are so much larger than they are and are in charge of their well being. It's good to read something like this to help you remember.

Stopping by from the A-to-Z Challenge. The passage you shared was a hard read, but necessary reminder. I went through many years of infertility before having my three children. So easy to forget the blessing they are when I'm in the midst of some teen struggle. Blessings to you! Paige (blogging @ http://www.talesfromthelaundryroom.com)

I read this many years ago. It was searing then, and remains so on rereading. I especially loved the final paragraph, of the two of them in the laurel thicket. Beautiful writing.

Marie, That is so powerful. You and I are in similar boats (so to speak) with facing the near loss of our children. But we're human, too. I do so very much like this reminder–particularly in your words–of how much we wanted our children. We do owe them our patience. And I love how it ends with forgiveness.
